Fieldworker Services

Fieldworker services are available to everyone with cystic fibrosis in New Zealand. Their help goes a long way to supporting our members throughout their lives.

Currently Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand has three fieldworkers – Northern Fieldworker Gretchen Kitching, Central Fieldworker Jude Kelly, and South Island Fieldworker Sue Lovelock. They know first-hand some of the challenges involved in raising a child who has CF and many of the issues that Adults with the condition may face.

They travel around New Zealand’s main cities, meeting with clinicians, the CF community and visiting the parents of newly diagnosed children. They regularly attend outpatient and inpatient clinics during the week where they are consulted by parents and adults who have the condition.

They understand the cystic fibrosis health condition, and the New Zealand health and disability support systems so they know what help is available from clinicians, external agencies, and Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand.

Our Fieldworkers have plenty of experience with:

  • Identifying the needs of CF families and talking through any concerns
  • Providing information throughout all stages of CF from when a newborn is diagnosed
  • Helping to navigate health and disability support networks
  • Assisting with applications for financial assistance provided by WINZ and the Ministry of Health Carer Support to assist with child care.
  • Providing information and support to other people in the family
  • Looking at options for the future in terms of health care and fertility
  • Providing support to people with cystic fibrosis who have recently undergone a lung transplant
  • Advice and tips for encouraging people with CF to carry out their treatment
  • Helping to look for external assistance such as counselling if it’s required
  • Identifying any welfare needs that Cystic Fibrosis NZ or local CF branches may be able to assist with
